Corn ethanol doesn’t stack up to conservation where climate’s concerned

Weighing the net greenhouse gas benefits of clearing an acre of conserved grassland to grow corn for ethanol against leaving it fallow, a study in Ecological Applications finds that it takes a full 48 years for the biofuel to stack up. Conversely, converting land under long-term cultivation and setting it aside for conservation saves more carbon over 42 years than conventional ethanol production, the study finds. Land conservation programs, such as the federal government’s Conservation Reserve Program are the more effective and economical way to mitigate climate change, at least in the near term, the authors from Duke University conclude.

The silver lining, or the best of both worlds, is the future of cellulosic ethanol. The study estimates that growing grasses for these advanced biofuels could actually increase soil carbon levels by 30 to 50 percent over normal conservation reserve lands, while at the same time powering your gas tank. – Jessica Leber
